Darren Criss Interview with Marie Claire UK

Gleeks, do we have a treat in store for you! Earlier this month, Team MC sung and danced their way through the spectacular Glee Live! show, watched the DVD and bought the t-shirt. And then we decided that we really should share the experience with you, dear readers. So we caught up with our favourite Warbler Darren Criss after the show, who let us in on bagging a part in the all-singing, all-dancing hit, his favourite Glee moments, and his thoughts on the future for Kurt and Blaine...

Q: What's your favourite EVER Warblers number?
A: 'Gosh. My favourite number to perform live would have to be - and it's going to sound like a bit of a copout! - Teenage Dream. There?s a certain nostalgia attached to it - and in Glee terms it's the hallmark of what's happened to Blaine and to myself. I always get goosebumps whenever we perform that one. People play it all the time, and they're like "sorry, we're playing Teenage Dream again!,' and "I'm like no, pump it up."'

Q: How have you settled in to being part of such a huge show?
A: 'Quite often I'll step out of my body and I'll look at myself and go "you're on Glee - what the hell?!" because I watched it become so big. It's very humbling.

'Everyone's very lovely and I lucked out in every possible facet - it's a great show, a wonderful part that I believe in, and I've been given a wonderful storyline that I could have never dreamed of.

'It's been fun working on the show as the new guy, because I have this new kid wide eyed appreciation of everything and it's very exciting all the time. It's not to be taken for granted. I was unemployed before, so it's a bit of a blessing.'

Q: What went through your head when you landed the Glee part?
A: 'I thought it was a joke! I’m a composer mostly, I’ve made most of my way writing music and I have a theatre company [StarKid Productions].

'I was kind of in the middle of getting together my newest show, so when my agent called and said "you got Glee" I said "yeah right, wouldn’t that just mess everything up!". Of course it hasn’t messed everything up - Ryan Murphy’s been very acknowledging of my existing career and told me to do both in whatever capacity I can.

'Right now feel like I’ve been on two tours, because on the Glee tour I’ve been playing other shows on my nights off - mostly for the star kid thing. It’ll be a packed house of people who know me from before singing along with my songs.'

Q: What's your fondest memory of filming your first Glee season?
A: 'Um - that's a really good question. I've had a lot! It is truly a blast to shoot, I mean the show's already a success, so we don't have to worry about that aspect too much.

'Every day honestly is a true joy, and I've had so many laughs with so many of the crew and so many of the cast members. Shooting Teenage Dream was one of my first days on set, and we were all just getting to know each other, all the Warblers together made it like this really exciting thing.'

Q: Spill the beans - are you definitely signed up for the third season now?
A: 'That would be cool, but I have no idea. Who knows! As far as I'm concerned I've been invited to this really lovely party.

'I think I've gotten so damn lucky, that for me to feel entitled would be ridiculous. I don't deserve any of this. I've fallen arse backwards in to the most incredible experience I would never imagine, so whatever happens, hey man. I don't know. But as a fan I'm just as curious an anyone else, I've really no idea what's going to happen.'

Q: Let's assume we'll see you again in season 3 - where would you like Kurt and Blaine's relationship to go?
A: 'Like I said, I'm so happy to be on the show that whatever happens I'll be happy with! But I'd like to see their relationship continue.

'There are so many other characters on the show that I'm actually more excited to see, though. Blaine has had his time in the sun and I think it's time to focus on other people - there are so many other stories to be told that I'm curious in as a fan.

'If they did decide to focus on Kurt and Blaine, I think Blaine has a past that would be interesting to explore. I think he's very envious of Kurt and his father's relationship - because he doesn't have the same relationship with his father. I just hope that they can just grow together, stick together and make a solid couple.'

Q: Who would you love to see on the show? Any more famous faces?
A: 'My go to answer - and you'll be so annoyed because you'll see this everywhere - is that I am a diehard lobbiest for Chrstoper Walken. I just don't know what I have to do to get him in. He can dance - no that's an understatement - the man can boogie!

'He's one of my favourite actors and a really cool guy. He also comes from a classical theatre background and he's a very song and dance man, so to me that just screams glee. I do know that he doesn't have a cell phone or a computer, though. Maybe I'll send a carrier pigeon?!'

Q: Do you feel the responsibility of having Glee fans look up to you?
A: 'Certainly. It is responsibility. I feel that I've been given a superhero costume - I've been given this cape - and it makes me feel small. I'm not a superhero, I'm just some random dude.

'But if people believe it then it's sort of my duty to make sure I live up to it. It's very empowering. And thank god it's a cape I believe in, because I'm not lying, or being untrue to myself when I try and stand up for those ideals.'

“Glee is obviously opening some new doors for you. Why is it so important for you to still be attached to this?”

Darren: Well, this is, you know, the blood in my veins. The idea for most creative artists is to be working with people that you love and projects that you love. I’ve been very lucky because I got to do that first. Glee has been this sort of, uh, reprieve from the stress that it can be this and people would be like, “That’s crazy. You’d think it’d be the other way around.”

Joe: We’re also harsh on him.

Darren: Yeah, they’re also way harsh on me.

Joe: Yeah, cause we’re his friends.

Interviewer: Have you ever kissed a man prior to last week's episode?  Darren Criss: Uh... yeah, but definitely not in a passionate sort of way that was the other night. You know, friends of mine - I've had a few gay roommates in the past - so birthdays, things like that.  Interviewer: So you've done it before in the past as a fun shock value for other friends?  Darren Criss: Oh, absolutely. But for all intents and purposes I'll just say no, because those don't really - Those aren't real, man. Those don't count. Interviewer: Did any of your gay friends watching this episode go, "Man, I wish he was"?  Darren Criss: I don't know, I haven't asked them... I would take that as a compliment if they said yes.

GLEE 3D IN CONCERT: DARREN CRISS

WRITTEN BY ELAINE LIPWORTH | 02 AUGUST 2011
POSTED IN FEATURES

Darren Criss plays Blaine Anderson, lead singer of the Dalton Academy Warblers, on Glee – rivals to McKinley High School’s Glee Club. He is also part of the ensemble cast in Glee The 3D Concert Movie. He spoke to Elaine Lipworth.SX News

Darren, from your perspective, is the movie an extension of Glee the TV show?

It is a great extension of the show, but it’s very real and it’s celebrated in real time with real people. There is a live catharsis that occurs that is just amazing. I think the film will be able to capture that for audiences who didn’t get a chance to make it to the show.

The concert tour must be quite different from doing the TV shows?

I come from theatre and in some ways working in TV is very impersonal, although I love it. There is a camera and a lens and a box and lights. When we shoot the live numbers on Glee it is a façade, even though you are putting in a lot of energy, you are still filming it. It is not like a theatre where you’re experiencing everything communally. So the fact that for the movie we are filming what would be a real live Glee show is cool.

What will we see of the Warblers in the movie?

The Warblers come out and we get to do a small mini set within the McKinley High Glee Club set, and it’s a blast. I give it everything I’ve got [laughs]. And by the end of it I collapse, I’m so tired. But I hope that it’s not all in vain because I’m having a blast each time.

What is your personal favourite song that you perform?

I get to do three songs, ‘Silly Love Songs’, ‘Raise Your Glass’ and of course ‘Teenage Dream’ and they are all very special. I don’t know if the movie will catch this but when I’m singing ‘Raise Your Glass’ there is a moment when I can see the audience and it is something I will keep in my mind forever: when the lights go up and I can see everyone jumping up and down, it is an awesome thing to behold. It has nothing to do with me or the song, it has everything to do with the celebration and the joy of Glee. It is so much bigger than the sum of its parts and just to witness that is a thrill. Get back to me in maybe five years and I’ll probably be a jaded old soul. But right now it’s so nice to be doing this thing that people have responded to.

What was it like joining a show that is so popular?

I have a very unique perspective because I joined the show after it had become successful so I still have those moments when I step outside my body and say to myself ‘You’re on Glee?’ [laughs]. It is surreal and continuously humbling and bizarre that I am a part of this show. I never thought I would be part of it in my wildest dreams. The cast is lovely and I lucked out. It is a great show, I play a great character, the songs are amazing, the storyline is interesting and the socio political theme attached to my character happens to be something I believe in.

Why does everyone love your character and The Warblers?

I think they wanted something different. I joined in the second season when people were looking for something new and fresh, new characters, and I think a lot of things about The Warblers fed into a natural appetite that grew following the first season. Everyone was wondering whether Kurt would get a boyfriend. I like Blaine a lot, he’s a very cool guy.

Would you like to ditch the Warbler blazer and join The Glee Club?

Absolutely not [laughs].

Can you discuss your on-screen relationship with Chris Colfer who plays Kurt?

I’ve been lucky enough to work with the amazing Golden Globe Award winning Chris Colfer and that is fantastic. I get to work with him on a day-to-day basis and he is such a generous talent. Chris and I like to play. He always throws me things and I ping them back to him and it’s really fun. We definitely have a very lovely rapport personally – I think on screen too – and I hope you can see that in the characters.

‘Teenage Dream’ was the most successful Glee cover to be released. Were you surprised by that? It must have been exciting.

Well, rather objectively, when I listen to the song I love it. But honestly, I think it has very little to do with me. I think the popularity of Blaine and The Warblers is due to the awesome elements like the blazers, the hair, the setting and the potential relationship between Blaine and Kurt. All these things are so cool that when people really responded to that song I was not surprised. I was thrilled and I didn’t think I was entitled to that response, but as a fan of the show I would be watching myself and thinking ‘Yes, I’ve got to buy this’ I would feel the same way. I am on the show but I am also a fan.

Glee The 3D Concert Movie is out August 11, 2011.
